Women who have lost weight at 40 and beyond are all over the media. If you pay any attention to television or magazines at all, you know that weight loss is a big issue with women. The older you get, the harder it seems to shed those extra pounds. Women over 40 can lose weight, they just have to go about it differently than those who are a bit younger. Metabolism slows down, hormones flip-flop, and it seems an impossible feat – but it isn’t.
Who are some of these women that have lost either a small amount of weight, or even dramatically transformed their figures? Valerie Bertinelli, Marie Osmond, and Jillian Barberie are just a few people who have won their battle against those extra pounds. Weight loss is a subject that concerns many, and it seems especially hard to get rid of those pounds when you are a certain age. So, what can you do to make your efforts successful?
Women over 40 need to do certain things that help increase their metabolism. A good metabolism burns fat, even when you are at rest. This means that even though you are sleeping or sitting and not active, calories are still burning. Some of the things you can do to increase your metabolism are exercise and eating the right foods. Foods that help you accomplish this include spicy foods like pepper, onions and garlic. Also, eat plenty of citrus fruits, bananas and low-fat dairy products. It has been proven that dairy products help slim the waist line. Drinking green tea helps as well, and you want to avoid processed and fried foods as much as possible.
The kind of exercise you do when you are over 40 makes a difference as well. Light weight bearing exercises build a small amount of muscle without bulking you up. Muscle burns fat, and you will be quite surprised to see the transformation in your body if you practice working out with light (5 to 8 lb.) weights for about 20 minutes 3 times per week. Perform squats and lunges while holding the weights, and give your arms and chest a good workout as well.
Other than weight bearing exercise, women over 40 need to do a small amount of cardio to experience good results. You can achieve this by walking at a brisk pace or jogging for 20 to 30 minutes 3 to 4 times per week. Consider doing your work outs in the morning; sometimes when you put it off until later in the evening, you are tired and it is easy to just forego exercise altogether. Weight loss is never easy, but it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you think. There is no need to starve yourself, just be smart about what you do eat.
One other thing women over 40 should do to speed their efforts is to eat smaller meals and eat more often. The body requires calories in order to burn fat, so eating 5 to 6 small meals per day puts your metabolism in high gear. These meals should consist of the right amounts of protein, fat and carbohydrates. You can still eat snacks, but make healthy choices and try to avoid gorging yourself with donuts, cake, pies and ice cream. Put these tips to use and give it your all, and you too will find that weight loss isn’t nearly as hard as you thought! And who knows – you may end up having a body that is just as slim and shapely as any celebrity.
